WARNING
Information on installation, adjustment and replacement of products that cannot be found in the user manual will be provided to you at the place of purchase or from your distributor. The dealer's manual for professional and experienced bicycle mechanics can be found on our website (https://si.shimano.com).
For safety, please read this "User's Manual" carefully before use, follow it for proper use, and keep it for future reference.
The following instructions must always be followed to prevent personal injury and physical damage to the equipment and surroundings. The instructions are classified according to the degree of danger or damage that may occur if the product is used incorrectly.
DANGER - Failure to follow the instructions will result in death or serious injury.
WARNING - Failure to follow the instructions could result in death or serious injury.
CAUTION - Failure to follow the instructions could result in personal injury or physical damage to the equipment and surroundings.
WARNING
- To ensure the safety of children using this product, children should be instructed on proper use after both guardians and children have fully understood the following information. Failure to follow the instructions may result in serious injury.
- Do not disassemble or modify the product. This may cause the product to malfunction, you may fall unexpectedly, and you may be seriously injured.
- Before attempting to ride with these pedals and cleats (on shoes), make sure you understand the operation of the locking/releasing mechanism of the pedals and cleats (on shoes). SPD pedals are designed to release only when necessary. They are not designed to release automatically if you fall off the bicycle.
- Use only SPD shoes with this product. Other types of shoes may not release from the pedals or may release unexpectedly.
- Use only SHIMANO cleats (SM-SH51/SM-SH56) and securely tighten the mounting bolts to the shoes. Failure to tighten the screws securely may result in a fall that will prevent the cleats from releasing.
- Before attempting to ride with these pedals and cleats, apply the brakes, then place one foot on the ground and practice engaging and releasing each cleat from the pedal until you can do it automatically and with minimal effort.
- Ride on a flat surface first until you have learned how to engage and release the cleats from the pedals.
- Before riding, adjust the holding force of the cleats on the pedals to your needs. If the holding force of the cleats on the pedals is weak, the cleats may accidentally release, you may lose balance, and you may fall off the bicycle. If the holding force of the cleat on the pedals is high, the cleats may not be easy to release.
- When riding at low speed or when there is a possibility that you will have to stop (e.g. when making a full turn, at an intersection, when riding uphill or when turning a sharp corner), release the cleats from the pedals beforehand so that you can quickly put your feet on the ground if necessary.
- When riding in adverse conditions, use a lower cleat holding force to attach the pedal cleats.
- To ensure proper attachment and release, keep the cleats and bindings free of dirt and debris.
- Remember to check the cleats for wear regularly. Replace the cleats when they are worn and adjust the cleat holding force before riding and after replacing the pedal cleats.
- If you do not heed the above warnings, your shoes may not come off the pedals when you want them to, or they may come off unexpectedly or accidentally, and serious injury may result.
- Lift your feet off the pedals and move them to the side to release them from the pedals. Place one foot firmly on the ground and practice putting and taking the other foot off the pedal until you become accustomed to the entire operation. Otherwise, you may fall and be seriously injured. If you are unable to perform this operation, use the product with the spacers installed or the short pins replaced.
- Wear clothing and protective equipment that are appropriate for the type of bicycle you are using. Since the pins are very long, they can cause serious injury if they come into contact with your skin.
- If the reflectors are dirty or damaged, do not continue riding the bicycle. Otherwise, it will be difficult for oncoming vehicles to see you.
- Do not use the pedals or cleats in a manner other than that described in the owner's manual. When the cleat and pedal are facing forward, the cleat can be released and engaged with the pedal. Read the owner's manual carefully for instructions on using the cleats. Failure to follow the instructions may result in serious injury.
- Read the instructions and select the correct product for your needs. Consider the type of bicycle, the terrain you will be riding on, and the conditions. Single-release cleats (SM-SH51) and multi-release cleats (SM-SH56) are available for use with these pedals. Cleats such as single-release cleats (SM-SH52) and multi-release cleats (SM-SH55) cannot be used as they do not have certain functions, such as providing stable foot release performance and sufficient holding force. If you continue to use such cleats, the shoes may not come off the pedals when you want them to, or they may come off unexpectedly or accidentally, which could result in the bicycle falling and serious injury. Failure to follow the instructions may result in serious injury.
